What Does the Laken Riley Act (LRA) Do?

Effective January 29, 2025, the Laken Riley Act (LRA) expands state power by granting state attorneys general sweeping authority to sue the federal government for failures in immigration enforcement, even over individual enforcement cases. It also drastically expands mandatory detention by now including noncitizens merely arrested for a certain offense, even if it is a low-level offense, and not just convicted individuals.
