The category of B visa applies to those aliens who wish to visit the U.S. for a temporary period. Under this category there are two visas:
B-1 Visa is for Business Purposes
Aliens entering on B-1 visa can engage in business activities like commercial and professional nature including consulting with his business partners; travelling for a scientific, educational, professional or business convention, or a conference on specific dates; settling an estate; negotiating a contract; participating in short-term training; transiting through the United States. The period of stay granted to a B-1 visa holder is brief usually three months from the date of entry.
B-2 Visa is to Travel for Pleasure or Medical Purposes
Aliens entering on B-2 visa can tour and visit friends and family; medical treatments; participation in social or cultural work. Usually a period of six months is granted from the date of entry.
Aliens must apply at the U.S. Consulate/Embassy in the foreign country for B-1/B-2 visa. They must clearly state the purpose of the visit and show attachment to a foreign residence to which the alien intends to return upon leaving the U.S., show financial stability during the period of stay in the U.S. Spouses and children may travel on their separate B-2 visa. B visa holder cannot engage in gainful employment during their stay. However, they may enroll in certain academic programs.
Change of status is permitted without leaving the country provided they are not inadmissible otherwise. Extension of additional six months may be granted if an application is made for such extension along with necessary documents evidencing medical or similar emergency. B visa holder may also apply for adjustment of status to immigrant visa in certain cases.
